Virgin Media had asked the users to tweet and show their support to either United or City to decide the colour of the Town Hall for the derby night to which thousands responded.
More than 20,000 messages of support were sent across to the teams. United had the backing of 17,555 and 3,344 were supporting City. The Albert square Town Hall was lit up in the same proportion as the above numbers to which red dominated with 84 percent.
There were some noteworthy tweeters like Melanie Sykes, former keeper Peter Schmeichel, City legend Franny Lee and John Stapleton.
The competition went across the globe as fans from countries like South Africa, India, USA, Australia, Venezuela and New Zealand took part.
Ryan Adolpho, manager at Virgin’s branch in the Arndale Centre, said:
“It looks like United fans have scored the first goal by winning our competition but City still have plenty of time to bag the bragging rights in the real match. We wish both teams the best of luck and will be glued to the game on to find out who will take the three points.”
